长期从事岩土工程现场测试、动荷载作用下岩质边坡稳定性分析方面的研究工作。主持国家自然科学基金面上项目2项,参研多项国家自然科学基金面上项目和重点项目。作为项目/专题负责人先后承担南水北调西线工程地应力测试与地应力场反演和福建宁德核电、广东台山核电土石方爆破开挖安全监控等多项国家重大工程研究项目。在动荷载(爆破和地震)作用下边坡破坏机理与安全评价方法以及地应力测试技术与地应力场反演方法等方面取得了一系列初步研究成果,积累了较为丰富的理论研究与工程实践经验。
在国内外期刊上发表学术论文近50篇,其中以第一作者在《International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences》、 《Engineering Geology》、《Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering》、《Computers and Geotechnics》和《Bulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environment》等期刊上发表SCI论文6篇,以第一作者在《岩石力学与工程学报》等期刊上发表EI论文10余篇,获得软件著作授权1项。2007年荣获中国科学院院长优秀奖;2007年、2010年分别获得湖北省科技进步一等奖和国家科技进步二等奖各1项。
